On 5 December 2024 a young Hybrid Strawberry Tree (Arbutus x arachnoides) was planted on the grass east of the Pear Tree Cafe. The tree was very kindly donated by a group of former planning students at South Bank College in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their graduation. This species was chosen as the very old Hybrid Strawberry Tree west of the Ladies Pond, which probably dates from the original planting of trees in the Park, has suffered storm damage and is no longer in good health.
This Japanese Cherry 'Shirofugen' was planted on 30 May 2022 on the 50th anniversary of the Big Dipper Tragedy in Battersea Park on 30 May 1972, in memory of the five children who lost their lives.
